Entirely necessary. The perforated print boards are a little hard to remove prints from but amazing for ABS.

They are suppose to be bent into a shape that facilitate the intallation.

Works perfectly. The following are the time in min:sec it takes to heat up to 100° C. The heated bed is a bit larger than the stock build plate and comes with two perforated boards. I laid a PEI sheet on one of the perforated boards and it works flawlessly.
